Summary: At the end of 'Enemy at the Gate' what happens to those on Atlantis?
A/N: There was no clear confirmation that Kanaan and Torren were on the city so I'm giving my own version of what I think happened to them. Plus here's the LorneLovers explanation as to why Lorne wasn't with the others at the very end. Read, Enjoy, and Review please!
Max stood on the balcony and stared at the Golden Gate Bridge, her hands gripping the railing and heart pounding.
They were home.
It was hard for her to believe, there were times when she thought that she’d never see it again but now...Atlantis was actually on Earth again. Already she missed the few Athosian children who had survived Michael’s prison and hoped that they weren’t culled by the Wraith and grew up to have families of their own. If she missed the children already Max could only imagine how much Teyla missed Torren as well as Kanaan and wondered why she hadn’t brought them along as well because growing up here would be a much better alternative to the Pegasus Galaxy.
A plane roared overhead and Max shaded her eyes from the sun as she stared, knowing that they couldn’t see her or the city. She stood on the balcony for some time, wondering what was going to happen now that everyone was back on Earth; if the IOA would continue to let them stay or leave only a skeleton crew on the city.
It was plainly obvious that she’d be let go; there was no need for her to teach children who’d been left behind or to study a planet’s history that they had no way of reaching.
The sun hung low in the sky when she finally decided to head back inside to start packing her belongings; she’d have to start figuring out where she wanted to go from here. Maybe she’d travel for awhile, she had enough money saved and had always wanted to see the world. But she knew that it wouldn’t be the same, not after being in a completely different world and seeing things most people only dreamed of.
--
Teyla watched Maxine stare at the sight before them and couldn’t help but wonder what was going through the woman's mind. She wondered if the younger woman was happy to finally be back home or if she was missing Pegasus as so many were.
Walking inside, Teyla allowed herself to think about Torren and Kanaan. There hadn’t been time to recall them from New Athos, where they were visiting, before Atlantis had left the planet. Even though Woolsey had offered to drop her and Ronon off before they left Pegasus, she had declined because in truth Teyla hadn’t wanted to delay them in case it cost them down the line and because she had been curious as to what Earth looked like.
Now it seemed that her curiosity had cost her both of them since it looked like Atlantis was not returning to Pegasus any time soon.
Teyla also wondered what would happen to her now; she didn’t have any of the special skills that were needed to run the city and she didn’t want to stay behind the shield. She wanted to explore the planet, see what wonders it had; what life would be like without the Wraith being a constant threat.
But that might have to wait because for now she was stuck in the city, only able to see what was just beyond her grasp from behind an invisible wall and longing for her family.

Lorne stood at the exit of the Jumper Bay and looked at the few that remained. He had a feeling that he wouldn’t see them much longer and wanted to burn the image of them sitting together into his memory. It had been a hell of a four years for him but he wouldn’t change any of it, no matter how many lives they had lost in the process.
As soon as John had given him clearance he had taken a cloaked Jumper to Onizuka Air Base, then borrowed a car to see his sister and nephews in San Francisco. They had been surprised and excited to see him and had spent hours catching up on the going’s on of the Lorne clan. Eric and Pete had demanded that he tuck them in before leaving so he indulged them and stayed for dinner and then until it was time for them to go to sleep. Both wanted a story so he told them one about Atlantis but changed enough until it sounded too fantastical to be real.
Evan had hinted to Jamie that he might be around more, but she had been skeptical. And she had a right to be; in the past four years he’d only been on Earth a handful of times and even then it hadn’t been for long (with the exception of when he broke his leg and even then he had been stuck in the SGC infirmary the majority of the time).
But Evan swore that this time was different but Jamie had just given him a look that said ‘we’ll see’.
Sighing and finally exiting into the hallway, Lorne knew that his days in the city might be limited, it didn’t take someone of McKay’s intelligence to figure out the IOA would put the screws on the SGC to reduce the military force on the city now that they were free from the Wraith and the city no longer was the only way to Earth in the Pegasus Galaxy.
Lorne didn’t know if he wanted to continue with the SGC or ask for a posting at a normal air base, one where the personnel hadn’t heard of the Wraith, Ori, Atlantis and Pegasus was just the name of a mythological horse. However, deep down Evan knew that he’d never get used to anything that was considered ‘normal’; to him normal was what a person on Earth would consider science fiction.

John saw Major Lorne leave the Jumper Bay and entered the area himself after a few seconds. Walking over to his favorite one, he waited while the ramp lowered and then walked inside of it. Sitting down in the pilot’s seat, he powered up the ship and was soon rising out of the city.
Making sure that the Jumper was cloaked, he headed out from the city; skimming over the ocean. As he flew, John wondered what would happen next. Any number of things could happen; he could be reassigned within the SGC, they could decide they didn’t need him anymore and ship him back to McMurdo, or they could leave him on the city as the head of a reduced military force until they actually decided to do something with him or he retired (which ever came first).
It’s not that he hated being on Earth again, in fact it was nice not to worry if the Wraith would re-discover Atlantis and attack again, or even what kind of trouble his team would get into the next time they were off-world. But at the same time it felt like he was on vacation and he’d been returning home soon.
Home.
That’s what Atlantis and Pegasus had become to him.
Pulling the Jumper up into the air, John wanted to do a few maneuvers but knew that it would be impossible because the Jumper was cloaked and no one would be able to see him if he suddenly lost control.
Softly sighing, John turned the Jumper back around and headed towards Atlantis while wishing he, and the city, were still in Pegasus.
--
Max paused, her hand hovering over the keyboard for a few seconds before she pressed ‘enter’ on the password protection and then pulled out the jump drive. Looking at it she sighed and placed it in its case.
She then stood and walked over to the glass coffee table to gather up all of her notes on the papers and theories that would never be proven, finished, or published.
Once they were filed and locked away she pulled out Europe Through The Back Door and started to leaf through it. However the book couldn’t hold her attention and she ended up setting it aside and watching the night sky through her window.
--
Telya lit the candles in her room and tried to relax in order to meditate but found that her mind kept wondering to Torren as well as Kanaan and hoping that they, and the rest of her people, were busy rebuilding the settlement on New Athos.
She also wondered what they would think when they tried to return to Atlantis and found that the ‘gate would no longer connect to the city.
Standing, she walked over to the dresser on the far side of the wall and picked up a photograph John had taken of the three of them before all of this. They all looked so happy and had no idea what was about to happen.
Tears prickling her vision, Teyla let them fall as she wished they had come with her as well.
--
Lorne sat down in the chair by the window and reached for his sketch pad. Resting it on his lap, he started to put the pencil to paper but paused, staring at the painting he had done of one of the spires of the city; wishing he could show it to Jamie and tell her all about his adventures in Pegasus.
--
John walked into his quarters and stood by the door for several minutes, taking in every little detail of his room. Then he moved over to the bookshelf and pulled out a thick volume. Settling on his bed he opened it to where the bookmark was and started reading War and Peace.

Date: 2009-01-22 03:39 am (UTC)as for Ronon's POV...eh, he really didn't have much lose back in Pegasus and had been to Earth with Sheppard before so he knew what it looked like.
