sgteam14283: (specal hell)

Disclaimer: I'm not a true Superman fan, hell I don't even really like the guy, but I've read enough background and have heard [livejournal.com profile] reyclou and [livejournal.com profile] bitemetechie talk/write (at length) about the subject so the following is an amalgamation of the three. Also I've seen one season of Smallville so I'm not just talking through my hat.

This makes me want to hit my head into a wall until I'm knock-out for several reasons.

a) SG-1 and Smallville are two completely different shows and genres. First off, SG-1 is a sci-fi show in content/concept/application while Smallville is a teen-drama in the majority of its content and concept while the application of the Superman mythos is in the background. Honestly, they seem to have more 'I like you but do you like me?' episodes than ones that deal with Zod/Doomsday/Lex (don't get me started on how they said Doomsday was created...that'll just get a whole different rant from me).

In fact that's why I stopped watching the one season I actually bothered to watch...it was just too teen-drama of the week/soap opera-y for me (that and Bones is a better bitchin' show in more ways than one).

b) they've screwed over the whole Superman concept by having him be all whiny and 'woe is me, I can't be normal because my parents wanted me to live on a different planet that happened to give me super-powers.' Superman/Clark Kent knew that he was different when he lifted a car up without breaking a sweat and decided to use his powers to help people who needed it.

The basic concept of Superman was someone fighting for social justice and against tyranny. He was also based on characters like Sampson and Hercules.

The Clark Kent of Smallville seems to be nothing more than a whiny teenager who bitches about how he can't have a normal life because his father wanted him to live and be something great.

c) cameos. What ass-hat in the WB's writers room thought it would be a good idea to bring in other DC characters? It's seems like they want to see how many characters they can fit into a season and while it's occasionally ok, the reason it pisses me off is because it seems that they don't care if it meshes with that specific character's time-line.

Yes, Smallville has raised more awareness of the whole Superman mythos but the Chris Reeves movies and the latest one (which I have my own special issues with) has done the same without the sucktacular story-lines and 'teen-drama of the week' format.

Also I want to point out that Smallville might not get a ninth season. First of all, the current season hasn't ended yet and while it has been renewed for an eighth season the ratings over all have been declining. Secondly, they're running out of Superman storylines and I would hate to see what they come up in making up storylines.

Lastly, I'd like to think that Tom Welling would like to do something else (re: something better) with his acting career.

I wish I could say that to my sister and have her listen... but she'd just be like... its not a show about Superman... the way she insists that Twilight is good because its not a story about vampires... oh well :D

the stupidity of people constantly astounds me.

I should ask your sister if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck does that make it a duck? :P

Days like this, I'm reminded why I love you so very, very much. -glomp-

Keep the faith. Smallville will die.

And if it doesn't die before the ninth season, it'll certainly die before it gets to ten.

*is laughing hysterically*

Can I show this to the next idjit who asks me why I don't watch Smallville when I like all the scifi-y stuff? *head desk* And don't even get me started on "I never liked Superman in the first fucking place!"

feel free to.

someone on Gateworld posted that Smallville was sci-fi and whoever said to the contray didn't know the premise of the genre.

I just laughed.

Thanks. Oy...it's comic, guys. Not scifi.

Although I'm still arguing with my librarian who insists on classifying Anne McCaffery with fantasy and not scifi. McCaffery herself has said her books are scifi!

Yeah for laughing at them! I've been staying off the threads, figuring I'd just want to kill someone with the moods I've been in.

actually this was in the comments section of the article. Another one said Doctor Who wasn't sci-fi, which caused an eyebrow raise as well as a 'wtfh?'

I hate people who pretend to know everything but know nothing at all...

Yeah...I'm just not gonna touch that tonight...cuz I'm in a mood.

Doctor Who is more scifi than Superman.

D'oh I'm related to one of those. It's scary. Especially when he starts lecturing on something I've studied and definitely know more about than he does.
