I luffs the new Trek :D
If you couldn't tell, I saw it today and holy crap it actually lived up to all the hype. Although
bitemetechie was right and there was no real "deeper" message overall, I could see one for Spock where he learns to co-exist with his emotions and that they're not a bad thing necessarily.
Chris Pine was pretty good as young!Kirk, although he didn't have the trademark pause...maybe that'll be in the next movie ;)
Zack Q. was an almost awesome Spock, although he'll never be as great as Nimoy. There were a couple of times where I couldn't help but think 'Syler's going to eat your brain!' and was waiting for him to split Kirk's forehead open with his finger :P
Simon Pegg was a decent Scotty. Although there was one part in the movie (where young!Spock and young!Kirk were going to the Romulan ship) that he dropped the Scottish accent. And I kinda wish he was in more of the movie, but oh well. And when he said 'I'm givin' her all she's got!' I (quietly) squeed.
Carl Urban... *dies* Oh. My. God. He got DeForest's Bones down pat. By the end of his first scene I was like 'Can I have your babies plez?'
Sulu and Checkov were pretty good, I loved the sword fight that Sulu had on the platform; it was pretty bitchin' and I want his sword (katana?).
And then there was Paul. I (quietly) squeed when he was on, even though it was only for a few minutes. He rocks my socks.
One thing I didn't like was the Spock/Uhuraunder overtones...sorry but like
bitemetechie said, there's Spock/Chapel. Although they can get away with it since it's "AU".
One line from Nero (the name which I got my history fangirl into squeeing) I thought was pretty interesting was the 'I committed genocide to prevent genocide.' Doesn't that seem like going back to kill Hitler in order to avoid the Holocaust; no matter how you look at it one evil is being committed to prevent another evil.
Some of my favorite bits was when McCoy was stabbing Kirk with all the hyposprays; he seemed to be getting some kind of twisted pleasure that which made it even more hilarious, when Chekov tried to say 'v' (it was 'nuclear wessals' all over again) and when he was running to the transporter room shouting 'I CAN DO ZAT! I CAN DO ZAT!', and the 'Nurse Chapel' cameo (word only) when McCoy was trying to medicate Kirk, also the beginning with wee!Kirk and stealing the convertible; that's why you don't lower the top while going 80mph...or drive it off the cliff :P (it also gave me bunnies...hell the entire movie did but that part is the only thing that I can really work into the story without having it be really ridiculous)
Although my most favorite moment was the TNG reference where Kirk said he was going with Spock and Spock said that he could cite StarFleet Regulations but he wouldn't listen to it anyways.
Overall J.J. did a pretty good job with the franchise and we'll see what he brings to the next one (assuming he's gonna direct it)

Date: 2009-05-11 11:54 pm (UTC)I actually think that might have been a good thing, that he didn't have it. Cause if he did, that might have come across like he was trying too hard to impersonate Shatner...
Carl Urban... *dies* Oh. My. God. He got DeForest's Bones down pat. By the end of his first scene I was like 'Can I have your babies plez?'
Pardon the pun.... but i would TOTALLY JUMP HIS BONES! OMG! I want him! (not necessarily Karl as much as McCoy... but STILL!)
when Chekov tried to say 'v' (it was 'nuclear wessals' all over again) and when he was running to the transporter room shouting 'I CAN DO ZAT! I CAN DO ZAT!'
OMG! He was so DAMN ADORABLE!
One thing I didn't like was the Spock/Uhura under overtones...sorry but like bitemetechie said, there's Spock/Chapel. Although they can get away with it since it's "AU".
Which I think is why they did it... to sort of make a point that it was different... still didn't much care for it, but I can overlook it.... I loved the look on pretty much EVERYONE's face when she kissed Spock on the transporter before they left. It was hilarious! And when Kirk was like...
"So her first name's Nyota-"
"I have no comment on the matter."
that made me go... awwwww.
also the beginning with wee!Kirk and stealing the convertible; that's why you don't lower the top while going 80mph...or drive it off the cliff :P (it also gave me bunnies...hell the entire movie did but that part is the only thing that I can really work into the story without having it be really ridiculous)
Oh god... I almost cried when the car went over the cliff... :(

Pardon the pun.... but i would TOTALLY JUMP HIS BONES!
me too.

lol, me too. Although I was rocking out to the music they had playing to be too sad. ^-^

Date: 2009-05-12 12:26 am (UTC)I had those moments as well...it took me a while of telling myself that Zach was not Gabriel Sylar but that he was Spock. No head splitting. LOL. :) I think he did a wonderful job in his portrayal though.
Carl Urban... *dies* Oh. My. God. He got DeForest's Bones down pat. By the end of his first scene I was like 'Can I have your babies plez?'
I loved Karl in LOTR and was very excited to see him get this role. He did not disappoint and honestly, IMHO, was the best part of the movie. My opinion might be biased though b/c I have a thing for Doctor characters. ;) Oh, and his line about being a Doctor not a Physicist---I cheered and clapped out loud (as did the rest of the theatre I was in!)
I thought Simon Pegg did an alright job, but I probably did not give him a fair start b/c I really wanted PM to get the role.
My favorite other series reference was the one about Admiral Archer's beagle. I love Porthos. *hugs the beagle*

Date: 2009-05-12 12:58 am (UTC)yes he did and I think that was why (other than Carl) he was spot on in the portrayal of a TOS character.

I've loved him in LOTR, Riddick and Doom so this only increased my love for him. Most definatly the best part of the movie.

you know my thoughts on Paul from GW and to be fair there wasn't alot of him to judge on plus I'm slightly biased as to who should've played Scotty. ;)
I must admit that I didn't get the Enterprise refrence until I saw it in a friends post, so I need to see the movie again to catch it (that's my excuse and I'm sticking with it).
also: I added you to my f-list here.

Date: 2009-05-12 04:52 am (UTC)Although by this point, I'm thinkin' that was Porthos the Third or Fourth... Unless 23rd century veterinarians have extended the lifespans of beagles!

Date: 2009-05-12 04:30 am (UTC)I disagree. The overall message of the film was that two wrongs don't make a right; killing a billion people to "prevent genocide" is not a virtuous act because you are essentially committing the same crime. Speaking of which, how was Nero preventing genocide anyway? Their sun went into supernova; how in the hell was that Spock's fault? That shit just doesn't compute.
The other message of the film was embracing one's own faults and weaknesses; to accept who you are.
Chris Pine was pretty good as young!Kirk, although he didn't have the trademark pause...maybe that'll be in the next movie
Chris specifically stated in one of his interviews that he didn't want to play the part like Shatner did because Shatner had his own way of doing things. Instead, he wanted to make the role his own.
Carl Urban... *dies* Oh. My. God. He got DeForest's Bones down pat. By the end of his first scene I was like 'Can I have your babies plez?'
IMO, the woman who divorced him should have her head examined...

Date: 2009-05-12 01:30 pm (UTC)thinking about it, I agree with you. In fact I commented about that line, and I think that Nero blames Spock because he said that he'd help save the planet and should have figured out every possible outcome plus (IMO) he was driven slightly mad by the loss of his wife and unborn child.

To be fair I haven't read any of the articles with the cast, but I recall hearing something about that. And he did do a good job in making Kirk his own.
IMO, the woman who divorced him should have her head examined...
Seriously. Is he still single? 'cause I'll totally date/marry him. I loved it when he muttered 'green-blooded hobgoblin' and I need some Carl/McCoy icons now... :P
