Jul. 15th, 2009 10:41 pmmassive spoilers for the episode
Well then...seems like Jack has a TARDIS full of skeletons.
My theory as to why he did it: Torchwood had him do the dirty work for them. It’s what he did before 1999 when he took over T3.
I found this episode kind of ‘meh’, maybe because we finally got to the climax of the story-line and the final two episodes are resolution. At least that’s how I see it.
Oh, btw I called that the children were pointing to London before they said it. Seriously, I did. Is the show becoming predictable or is the formula for Doctor Who/Torchwood the same? Obviously it would take place in Britain because it’s a British show, but still...they could have it be in Wales or Scotland. Well ok maybe not Wales since they blew the shit out of Cardiff, but the point still stands.
Ianto’s brother-in-law slightly annoys me, he seems like a step (or two) below Rhys in the intelligence department and while I have to admit that running a day care for the kids is somewhat smart, if he was really smart he would’ve charged 10 quid per hour instead of per kid.
Also what did his sister expect other than a signal to say that he’s ok? I mean he’s on the run for his fucking life and doesn’t know who to trust, so it’s not like he’s gonna blab about everything.
LOVED the Janto moment in the warehouse; although the moment before it where Ianto asked Jack if he felt the explosion was kind of sad because you could see the pain in Jack’s eyes. I also re-watched the scene of awesomeness where Ianto breaks Jack out of the concrete block and when Jack stands up you can see his eyes looked so broken. I can only imagine what his psyche is like.
Also another thought appeared to me; how the hell did Ianto know how to operate a machine like that but then it occurred to me that before he joining Torchwood he had a string of jobs so it’s easily conceivable that he had a stint as a construction worker. Not much else for a high school grad to do...
But getting back to the scene, I loved how Ianto basically said that they should live in the moment because the world is always ending (which is true in the Whoverse). And then Rhys had to spoil it by waiting for the damn beans. *grr face* You so know that they were going to play naked hide and seek.
The politicians still continue to be politicians, I hope Frobisher, his secretary and SpecialOps!Bitch all die because that would make me happy.
It was nice to see old tech being used again, the contacts are pretty wicked awesome and it made me giggle when Gwen said she borrowed them for “fun” and Ianto said that they were nice.
The 456’s reminded me of the aliens from Aliens with the shape and ectoplasmic goo. And the voice of the 456? Totally the voice of Frobisher lowered. During the first scene with them I kept waiting for them to break out of the tank and kill Frobisher and ThamesHouse!Guy. Sadly my wish wasn’t granted.
Also it’s nice to know that Jack’s daughter doesn’t completely hate him, that she kept trying to reach him to find out if he was ok when she saw that the Hub had blown up.
PC Andy rocked as usual, although his scene was too short. Tom Price is wickedly awesome and so sweet.
One thing the episodes could have done without are the numerous shots of the news anchors. Yes it shows how the “normal” people are responding to events and how the governments are covering everything up but I could really live without the mouth shots.
It was strange seeing Jack in modern clothes, although as a character he wears them well. But it’s just not Jack without the period WWII outfit. There was the nice little reference to ‘Something Borrowed’ where Ianto said he didn’t know the exact sizes of everyone but he has a good eye. Must have gotten that from his father, although after the ‘broke my leg’ reference it’s implied that he wasn’t the best parent...
But when Jack was back in his “normal” clothes he felt like he was a 100% back.
And I would like to steal the car that Jack stole, it’s pretty sweet.
no spoilers for future episodes please. Thank you!

Date: 2009-07-23 08:34 am (UTC)I'm still waiting for an explanation as to why they never heard from Martha, and why no one's tried to call the Doctor. A few throwaway lines would take care of that...

Date: 2009-07-23 01:16 pm (UTC)and I know about the Doctor! however, this is Torchwood so Jack's the big man to save the day. But it would've been nice to get a little explination about him.

Date: 2009-07-24 03:18 am (UTC)Indeed. But where is Martha, that they can't get in touch in case of emergency? The children were "stopping" all over the world!
(I'm not faulting you for not having an explanation. I'm faulting RTD and the writers (or did he write this all by himself?) for leaving gaping plot holes and insulting the intelligence of the fans.)

Date: 2009-07-24 03:27 am (UTC)and as of right now (having only seen up to Day Four) I'm not a big fan of RTD and he seems to keep digging the hole deeper...

Date: 2009-07-24 03:36 am (UTC)No kidding. I thought it was bad enough when he "pushed all the buttons" in "Journey's End," but this is shaping up to be much worse :) In the "Inside Look" programs, he almost seems to be bragging. He puts me in mind of a little boy who breaks all of his toys when he gets bored with them!

Date: 2009-07-23 10:18 pm (UTC)Martha's off on her honeymoon. But you can't tell me she didn't know what was going on. And why not try to call the Doctor? Who knows? But they weren't using their own phones, right? Because they were trackable? Maybe the modified phones weren't available.
And may I, pretty please, steal your icon? It's the best one I've seen with that pose. Love the color.

Date: 2009-07-24 03:32 am (UTC)By all means gank the Jack/Ianto icon :) It's the best I've seen with that pose, too. Just credit
