Major Evan Lorne felt the ground beneath him suddenly give way and instinctively reached out, but all he grasped was air. One moment there was shouting and the next his head is pounding something fierce and his whole body felt like it had gone through the ringer.

“Sir?”

It took a minute for Lorne’s brain to register the fact that he wasn’t alone and that the voice belonged to Lieutenant Laura Cadman.

Sir?

This time her voice had an edge of concern in it, like she was starting to panic and the last thing they needed was that. Lorne tried to speak but the words came out as a groan. Opening his eyes, he waited until stars stopped appearing before managing to mumble, “ ‘s wrong?”

“There was a cave in, sir. Managed to catch both of us. Major...you all right?”

His head clearer by now, Evan struggled to sit up and almost blackedout from the effort. Slumping forwards, he felt Laura grab him to keep him from pitching forwards and hurting himself even more.

“I’ll take that as a no.” Laura replied as she gently lowered the Major back down. Wondering if he was as banged up as she was, Laura felt for her torch and flipped the switch; but it didn’t turn on. Trying the switch a few more times as well as shaking it yielded the same result so Cadman safely assumed that it had been damaged in the fall. “Son of a bitch...” she cursed under her breath.

“You try my torch?” Lorne managed to get out while panting slightly from the exertion of trying to keep conscious. There was no doubt that he had a concussion but just how bad it was, he had no idea.

“Can't find it, sir. Must have gotten left at the surface.”

“Of course.” His eyes adjusting to the darkness of their prison, Lorne knew that help would soon be here, but how long was the question. The squints they had been guarding were most likely trying to figure out the best way to get at them without causing any more cave-ins while someone ran to the ‘gate in order to radio back for additional teams to help with the extraction effort.

So until the cavalry arrived they were stuck with trying to stay alive.

Enough time had passed that Evan felt clear-headed enough to try sitting up again and this time he managed to not feel like he was going to black out and his eyes had adjusted to the near-blackness that he was dimly able to make out their surroundings. The area was big enough so they wouldn’t hit their heads sitting, or even kneeling, and wide enough that he didn’t feel claustrophobic.

Granted it wasn’t the Mandarin Oriental but he’d been in worse places before this, and would be in most likely after this, so it would do. All that mattered to him was staying awake long enough to get out of here and Lorne assumed that Cadman had the same goal.

Wanting to break the silence that was deafening, Evan coughed and said, “So how do you propose that we pass the time until Colonel Sheppard shows up?”

“Not sure, sir.” Laura said, looking in the general direction of her CO and wondering how badly hurt he was. He must have the same killer headache that she did and it was impossible to figure out if the damage went beyond that because of the fact that their damn torches had been smashed during the hard stop they’d both taken. Shifting she felt something press against her back and wondered what it was; reaching back told her that it was the Major's torch. Silently hoping that it worked, she flipped it on and was suddenly greeted with the harsh glare.

“A little warning would be helpful next time, Lieutenant.” Evan chided gently with a hint of laughter in his voice, glad that she had found some source of light.

“Sorry sir.” Laura replied while squinting and waiting until her eyes had adjusted to the change in lighting before swinging it towards the Major to see how hurt he was. The result wasn’t pretty; he had a number of deep gashes along his right leg and face while his uniform was ripped all over and blood seeping into the cloth where the gashes were.

Evan followed the light and saw the damage himself, which looked worse than it really was. Nothing that a few stitches and maybe an overnight stay in the infirmary couldn’t cure. And from his sweep of Cadman yielded the same feeling, nothing more than a few scratches that needed bandaging.

After their wounds had been taken care of, they were left with nothing else to do except kill time. Setting the torch bottom up on the floor so the light spread out, he looked towards Cadman, “How about 20 questions?”

“Sir?”

“To pass the time, we need to do something to keep us awake. Or if you have a deck we could play strip poker.”

Laura felt her face heat up in a combination of anger and confusion, then caught the look of amusement on the Major’s face and realized that he had been teasing with the last suggestion. Or had he been serious? It was always hard to tell with the Major but Laura would bet that he was pulling her leg. But if Flyboy wanted to play that way...then it was time to fight fire with fire.

Smiling, she moved closer towards him and in a low voice all but whispered in his ear, “But I’m sure that you’d lose Major. And I’d hate to take advantage of you.”

Evan felt his eyes go wide after Laura spoke and was about to stammer out that he had just been teasing when he caught the glimmer of amusement in her eyes and realized that she had pulled a fast one on him. Breaking into a grin he chuckled while saying, “I have to hand it to you, Lieutenant, you have one hell of a bluff.”

Laura grinned and sat back, “Thank you sir. I have to give credit to my twin though; she’s the one who taught me.”

Evan dimly remembered reading in Cadman’s file that she had a twin but hadn’t given it any more thought the matter until she had brought it up now. He didn’t know what was worse, the fact that the Lieutenant had a twin or that a copy of Cadman was running around somewhere on Earth.

Most likely just as demolitions happy as her counterpart.

“Although she’s the complete opposite of me, sir.” He dimly heard Cadman continue, as if she had read his mind. “Cat’s the girly-girl type; got married right out of high school and has a huge family. But that does mean that I can be the awesome aunt who is always good for letting them stay up past their bedtime and giving them ice cream for dinner.”

Lorne knew that he should respond to the comment, but it seemed like too much of an effort at the moment and all he felt like doing was sleeping.

“Sir?”

Closing his eyes, he could feel himself start to slip into the darkness that was gathering around his eyes.

“Sir you-aw fuck no.” Laura knew she needed to act fast if she wanted to keep the Major from falling asleep and grabbed his shoulders, shaking him gently. “Sir...I need you to wake up.”

He only responded slightly and Cadman knew that desperate measures were needed. Taking a deep breath she muttered, “Please don’t court-martial me over this sir.”

Then she kissed him.

Lorne was half-way gone when he could hear Laura shake him while telling him that he had to wake up. Then he felt lips against his and it took a minute for him to realize that she was kissing him. Actually kissing him. A second after his brain processed that fact he felt a rush of adrenaline surge through him.

Eyes flying open, he gently but firmly pushed the Lieutenant away. Flustered, he coughed hoping to cover it up. “Lieutenant...what the-”

“I needed some way to wake you up, sir.” Laura replied while wishing for the ground to swallow her up.

“And shaking me wasn’t going to cut it?”

Laura opened her mouth to reply that desperate times called for desperate measures but was cut off by the sounds of shouting and debris being moved. Pausing, they both strained to hear the sounds again, hoping that they were experiencing the same hallucination. Then a patch of sunlight appeared and Evan heard John calling out for either of them to respond.

Oh thank God.” Laura thought as she shouted that they were hurt but alive.

Once they were truly on their way back to Atlantis via the Jumper that Colonel Sheppard had brought, Laura allowed herself to relax and closed her eyes. It had been one hell of a day.

“Lieutenant?”

Cadman opened her eyes to see that Lorne was looking at her with a smile on his face, “Sir?”

“Don’t worry; I’ll leave out your little act of heroism in the report.” Lorne replied with a wink.

Laura could feel her face heat up instantly at the reminder of what she had done and got the feeling that Major Lorne wouldn’t let her forget it for long time.

But she was fine with that.

(semi-unrelated) the other day I was at the town library checking out the Eastwick movie and the librarian and I got to chatting about the show and it was just so fun because she too was fangirl'ing out over Darryl. I think we stood there and chatted for 20 minutes or something about the show it was so weird/fun lol.

Yes it would have been *lovely* to see him on the show in a roll where he preferably didn't die ;)

This is great it's been ages since I read any decent Atlantis fic, and my favourite pairing too. I really have to crawl out from under this pile of Ski Jumping Slash and get out more.

Great fic

thank you! I haven't whumped Lorne in a while and felt that he was feeling a little neglected in that area. Plus it's good to be writting fic again now that school's out...get me back into the habit.

Loved this! A nice little Lorne ficlet to get me through the day. And yes, I caught the shout-out to Eastwick, too, lol. Poor Evan, all banged up like that, and trapped in the dark (pets Lorne).

One comment, though -- Lorne is American, as is Cadman. I think they'd be more inclined to use "flashlight" instead of "torch". But I could be wrong! :)

Thanks for sharing.

glad you like it and yes you're right, they would be more inclinded to use 'flashlight' instead of 'torch'. I blame the fact that I have a lot of UK friends ;)

Love the twin idea and the Eastwick reference (hey, is there a larger story lurking behind this? Because it totally feels like it :D). Basically love the whole story. Great idea and I love some good whump :D

Better you than me (because I'm very, very, VERY prone to being bitten by a bunny... ask mac ;)). Honestly, there's a good story lurking behind this...

Yes don't send the bunnies Row's way. She does NOT need more bunnies. I'm supposed to be on beta'cation, and if she were to get bitten by a SGA/Eastwick X-Over bunny I don't think I could resist working...
