“Are you sure about this?” Max asked Lydia as the brown-haired physicist put on rubber gloves and handed the schoolteacher an old towel.
“Trust me, Jason told me what to do. It’s simple; we just bleach it then add the dye.”
At those words Max stood up and backed away from Lydia. “Ok, that’s it; not gonna do it.”
“Why? I thought you wanted to.”
“Well yea, but not if Jason told you how to do it.”
“And why is that?” Lydia asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Because if you remember right, he tried to frost his hair with an Athosian hair dye and ended up bleaching it.” Max stated folding her arms and giving Lydia a stare she only reserved for misbehaving students.
Lydia was silent for a second. “Ok, I’ll give you that one but I’m not going to use Athosian dye. I got it from a friend on the Daedalus and it cost me a de-frag and a virus upgrade. And that was for one box.”
“So it’s from Earth?” Max asked hesitantly.
“Unless they somehow make ‘Splat’ in Pegasus.” Lydia remarked, pulling out the box. “See? It says ‘Made in China’. How much more Earth can you get then China?”
Max bit her lip, thinking. After a minute of silence Max looked at Lydia, who by this time was sitting on the counter-top, and said, “Ok, let’s do it.”
Lydia grinned and pushed off of the counter-top, jumping to her feet. “Sweet. Now sit down and we can get started.”

Doctor Rodney McKay walked into the cafeteria and smiled when he saw no sign of Lydia Winter and Jason Sheppard. Those two were the bane of his existence and it was bad enough that they irked him when separate, but when they were together (which was most of the time nowadays) it’s like they went out of their way to make his life hell.
But they weren’t here at the moment so why let the thought of them together ruin a perfectly good time to grab something to eat?
Rodney sat down with his tray and raised a spoonful of blue Jell-o to his mouth when he saw something out of the corner of his eye. Looking up he blinked rapidly, trying to comprehend what he saw.
Pink.
Bright Pink.
Not just any bright pink, but the kind if bright pink that’s used for florescent highlighters.
And it was on someone’s head.
Rodney, as well as the rest of the cafeteria, watched as she joined the line like nothing was wrong. As he stared, Rodney wracked his brain to try and come up with a name for the face.
But he was coming up with nothing.
Normally he was good with names and faces, but this time he was drawing a complete blank. But Rodney wasn’t bothered by it; if he didn’t remember her name then she wasn’t that important to him.
By this time she had gone through the line and sat down by one of the window seats, acting like nothing was wrong. It occurred to Rodney that she might not have looked in a mirror lately and therefore had no idea what had happened to her hair.
Yea…that was it; someone must have done it while she was sleeping. Who would color their hair like that on purpose?
Rodney dismissed the thought from his head and started eating; nothing could ruin the good mood he was in…that is until he heard, “…filled his closet with shaving cream so that when he opened it, it fell onto him.”
Looking towards the door, Rodney prayed that it wasn’t who he thought it was.
It was.
Scowling, Rodney watched as Lydia walked past him and over to the pink hair sitting down across from her.
“So has anyone asked yet?” Lydia asked Max, raising her eyebrows.
Max shook her head, “Not yet, I’ve acted like this is my natural hair color. You should’ve been here when I walked in; everyone was looking at me. Although Alex gave me a wink so I think she has an idea what’s going on. Did you tell her?”
“Well, yea. I thought she should know what was going on.”
Max opened her mouth to reply, but Lydia interrupted her saying, “Shhh…here he comes.”
Max bit back a smile as Lydia said, “Any plans for this evening?”
Rodney cleared his throat hoping to get Lydia’s attention.
“ ‘Cause Jay and I were thinking about watching a movie tonight.” Lydia continued on as if she hadn’t heard McKay.
“Winter.” Rodney said loud enough to be heard by both women.
“I dunno. I have a lot of papers to go over.” Max said, shrugging her shoulders.
“Winter.” Rodney repeated, a bit louder this time.
“Really? Are you sure you don’t have a date?” Lydia asked, smirking. “‘Cause I know a certain computer tech who would love to go out with you.”
“Lydia.” Rodney all but yelled.
“What?” she asked, a look of annoyance plastered on her face and in her tone. “Can’t you see that we’re trying to have a conversation here?”
“I just want to ask if you had finished the ZedPM simulations.”
“Yes and that could’ve waited until I had gotten to the labs.” Lydia snapped, turning back to face Max.
Max just stared at her cup of tea, afraid that if she looked up she would start laughing and ruin it.
“Well not really seeing as how I need the results to do my work.” Rodney replied.
“You’ll get them today ok?”
“Fine.”
Lydia took a sip from her cup and noticed that Rodney was still there. “Anything else?” she asked with a look of annoyance on her face.
“Does Elizabeth know about her hair?” Rodney asked, raising an eyebrow.
“What’s wrong with her hair?”
“It’s pink.”
Lydia looked at Max strangely then said, “No it’s not. It’s the same color it’s always been. Right Max?”
“Yea…I have no idea what you’re talking about, Doctor McKay.” Max said.
“So you’re telling me that you hair’s all ways been florescent pink.” Rodney said with disbelieving in his voice.
“I think the term that you’re thinking of is ‘shocking pink’,” Max replied coolly. “and I have no idea what you’re talking about. My hair is brown. Is and all ways has been.”
“Have you looked in a mirror recently?”
“Have you?” Max retorted.
Rodney was silent, trying to resist the urge to yell. This Max was spending too much time around Lydia; she was starting to sound just like her. He knew that they were pulling his chain…he was sure of it.
Just then he heard a very British voice say, “How’s it going girls?”
Turning around, Rodney saw Alex next to him and he relaxed immensely; here was someone other than Winter who could back him up; even if she did hate his guts as much as Winter did…if not more. “Alex, thank god.” Rodney said, smiling.
Alex looked at Rodney and asked with a raised eyebrow, “What McKay?”
“Please tell these two that…” Rodney trailed off, pink hair’s name escaping him. Dang it, he knew it a second ago.
“The name’s Max.”
“Max’s hair is blindingly pink.” Rodney finished, smiling smugly.
Alex was silent for a few seconds, looking at Max. “What are you talking about, McKay? Her hair’s almost as brown as Lydia’s.”
“I-I-I’m sorry?” Rodney stuttered. What was going on here? Was everyone around him going slowly mad?
“Are you hard of hearing? I said that Max’s hair is like it always has been.”
“Ok, time to get an un-biased observer.” Rodney thought, eyes sweeping the cafeteria. Spotting Lorne, he left the trio and walked over to him. “Major, can I ask you something?”
“What about McKay?” Lorne asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Just need your opinion on something; it’ll take a minute at most.”
Lorne was silent for a few seconds. Finally he stood and said, “Make it quick.”
“Good, just follow me.” Rodney said, walking back to the girls more confident than he had been when he left.
Once he and Lorne reached them, Rodney said, “Please tell them what color Marc’s hair is.”
“It’s Max.” Max replied, shooting daggers at Rodney.
Lorne looked at Rodney and said, “Why would you want to know something like that?”
Rodney sighed, “Just tell them what color it is, Major.”
“Ok. Brown.”
The smile that Rodney had been wearing fell like a ton of bricks. Brown? How could her hair be brown when it was the most obvious shade of pink?
Rodney fumed, feeling his cheeks flushing and knowing that his blood pressure was rising. They were all in on it; this was one big conspiracy and they had planned it from the start.
“Geeze, McKay what’s wrong?” Lydia asked, looking like the innocent angel she had most likely killed while it had been sleeping. “Maybe you should go and see Carson.”
“You…you…people.” Rodney managed to spit out before turning heel and storming out of the cafeteria.
Lydia, Max, Alex, and Lorne all watched Rodney storm out and were silent for a moment, letting what happened process. Then Lydia started giggling and it wasn’t long before the rest of them joined in.
“Oh man that was good.” Lydia said, wiping a tear away from her face. “The look on his face when Evan told him Max’s hair color was priceless. It was worth the whole thing.”
“Glad you thought so, because it was damn luck that he went to the Major instead of someone else.” Alex said, grinning.
“Well we thought he would, seeing as how the Major is one of the few people who can deal with McKay without getting the urge to shoot him.” Max said, smiling as Evan put an arm around her shoulders. Tipping her head back, Max said, “Thanks for going along with this.”
Evan smiled, “No problem. You can thank me again tonight; right now I have to dig my way through a pile of paperwork.” He gave Max a quick kiss and walked out of the cafeteria.
Alex wandered back to her post in the kitchen and left Lydia and Max sitting by themselves. They were silent for a while, each thinking about the prank they had just pulled.
Max tipped her head to the side and asked, “Do you think I should worry that McKay might try and see if this is a wig?”
Lydia shook her head and said, “Nah, he’ll just avoid you at all costs.”
“Good, ‘cause I might have to hurt him for not remembering my name.”
