I hit the button for the trunk and get out of the car, walking around back. Picking up the bags, I shift them around, close the trunk and start up the walk.
I’ve been in San Francisco for three months and am finally settling in. I’ve managed to find a nice house that’s just right; it’s a manor and according to the realtor used to belong to three sisters who just moved out. There are a few of school districts in the area and hopefully I can get a substituting job with one of them. The neighborhood is quiet and there are a number of families with kids, so I don’t have to worry about Jennifer’s lack of playmates.
Jennifer Ann Cale. That’s what I’ve decided her name is going to be. I want her to have Logan’s last name because Jennifer Ann Wainwright doesn’t roll off the tongue that well and she should have a part of Logan even if we’re not together.
I’ve kept in touch with Logan, letting him know the results of all the tests and such and last week he told me that he was able to get close to a month off so he’s going to come over and be here when it’s time.
As I head towards the door I can’t help but smile at the thought of all of this; it feels like my life is finally getting back on track.
I unlock the door, open it, and set the keys on the table while heading towards the kitchen. Glancing at the answering machine, I see that there are a few messages. Most likely Lydia, Crysta, Logan, or family; they’re the only ones that have my number so far.
After setting down the bags, I press ‘play’ and am greeted with Crysta’s voice; “So you said to call if anything of interest should happen to me. Well guess what? It did. I’m engaged. To Ted, the guy I met on Atlantis. We haven’t set a date yet but it’ll be sometime within the next five years. I hope. Anyways give me a call so we can go all girly over the entire thing.”
Before the next message can play the doorbell rings so I hit ‘stop’ and head over to the door, wondering who it could be. Opening the door I’m surprised to see who’s there.
Evan.
I just stand there for a few seconds, stunned. “Major…this is a surprise.” I say after finding my voice.
“So it’s Major now?” Evan asks, raising an eyebrow.
I just look at him and say, “Well what do you want me to call you? Jerk? Bastard? Thick-headed? Impossible to reason with?”
He just sighs, “I didn’t come here to fight Max.”
“Then why did you come here? And how did you know where I was living? Last time I saw you, you were on Atlantis.” I pause. “You’re still on Atlantis right?”
“Yea. I’m on leave. Lydia told me that you had moved to SF and gave me your address. I thought that we should talk.”
“Why? I thought everything that we needed to say had been said.” I reply, leaning against the doorframe.
“Can I come in?” Evan asks.
I’m silent, thinking. Finally I sigh and grudgingly move back from the door, “Fine, come on in.”
Evan steps inside and I close the door, leaning against it. I want this to be a short conversation. We stand in silence for a few minutes until I say, “Where’s Maria?”
“At my mom’s place. She doesn’t know that I’m here or she would have begged to come along.” Evan said, a smile playing across his face. “She still asks about you.”
“Really?” I ask, slightly smiling. I’ll admit that Maria had stolen a piece of my heart, as did all the other kids.
“Really. She was upset that you didn’t say good-bye.”
“Doctor Weir wouldn’t let me; said it would be easier if I made a clean break.”
Silence follows that and continues until I say, “What was so important that you came all the way here?”
Evan looks at me straight in the eyes and I can’t help but feel butterflies in my stomach. Or it just could be the baby. Yea, that’s it…it’s the baby.
“Because I didn’t like how we left things.”
“Really?” I ask, raising an eyebrow.
Evan sighs and runs a hand through his hair. “I don’t like this…you and me not talking; I want us to be friends again.”
“Then why did you say those things on Atlantis?” I ask. We both said a lot of hateful things towards the end of my stay on Atlantis, but if some of what we said wasn’t true then why did we say them?
“Because I didn’t want you to get hurt. Because I wanted to protect you from the IOA. Because I care for you.” Evan says, telling me the last part softly.
That last statement caught me off guard. My eyes go wide and I take in a deep breath. “A-a-as a friend right?” I ask, stammering.
Evan opens his mouth to reply when the doorbell rings, cutting him off.
I don’t know if I should be grateful or hate whoever’s at the door. “Hold that thought.” I say turning around to open the door.
Opening it, I’m surprised to see who’s at the door.
“Logan!” I exclaim, smiling. “What are you doing here?” I ask, moving in to hug him.
He wraps his arms around me and kisses me on the cheek, “I got a few days off and thought that I’d drop by as a surprise.” His eyes look past me and the smile he’s been wearing since I opened the door fades.
Knitting my eyebrows together I ask, “What’s wrong?” Then I realize that Evan’s still behind me. “Evan…the Major just dropped by.” I explain, stepping back so Logan can come in. “I didn’t even know he was in town until he showed up on my doorstep.”
“That’s ok, Max. You don’t need to explain.” Logan says, smiling faintly.
We stand in silence for a few seconds, until I break it by saying, “You guys want to stay for dinner? I’m sure I can whip up something.”
“That’s ok, I was just leaving.” Evan says, starting towards the door.
“I’ll see you later?” I ask, feeling Logan move closer to me and wrapping an arm around me. I automatically nestle closer to him and place a hand around his.
“Actually I have a flight back to Springs in a few hours; I just stopped by to talk to you.”
“But you’ll keep in touch?”
Evan smiles faintly, “Sure.”
I return the smile, “Tell Maria I said hi.”
Evan gives me one more smile and says, “Will do.” Then he’s walking down the drive towards his rental.
I break free of Logan’s hold and close the door. Smiling, I turn to face him and say, “You’re staying here tonight and I’m not taking no for an answer.”
Logan laughs and smiles, this one brighter than the one before. “Ok, just let me get my bags.”
As he walks back outside, I head into the kitchen and resume listening to the messages on my machine. The very next one is from Lydia; “What’s up Maxie? Long time no hear from. I hear that they have this thing called e-mail that’ll let you send a letter to someone just like that. That way you don’t have to wait for days for it to come by snail-mail. Crazy idea huh? Anyways, just wanted to give you a heads up that Major Lorne is back for a month. Ran into him the other week while I was in town myself and he asked about you; said he hadn’t heard from you in a while, so I told him what was going on. I gave him your address so he might show up one of these days. Hope that everything’s going great and don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”
I can’t help but roll my eyes at the irony of the message and hit the ‘delete’ button in time to hear the door close and Logan come walking through the hallway.
“Where do you want me to put my stuff?” he asks.
“On the floor is fine for now.” I say, walking up to him and smiling. I take his hand and pull him towards the stars saying, “You have to see the nursery.”
Logan smiles back, this one brighter than the one before and replies, “Ok, just tell me that it’s not all flowers and pastels. I don’t know if I can take any more of that.”
“Oh really?” I ask, raising an eyebrow. “Well, you’ll just have to see for yourself.” I then head towards the nursery, which is on the second floor, and as I climb up the stairs I realize that Evan never answered my question.
